Before You Buy Digital Products: A Practical Checklist

Quickselar Journal cover for the digital products buying checklist, with a blue buyer-checklist card

Before you buy digital products, check that the resource fits your task, opens in the tools you use and includes the files you expect. A clear preview and a specific description can tell you more than an attractive cover or a large bundle count.

This checklist helps you compare templates, ebooks, design assets, AI resources and other downloads. It also explains what to check after purchase, so you can start using the product with fewer surprises.

1. Define what you need the product to do

Write your goal in one sentence. For example: “I need an editable proposal that helps me explain the scope of a design project.” This is more useful than simply searching for a business template.

Decide which features are essential and which are optional. You may need an editable file, a worked example or a particular software format. A resource can be well made and still be the wrong fit for your task.

If you are comparing options, use the same criteria for each one. Avoid buying a larger bundle just because it contains more files. Check whether the extra items solve problems you actually have.

2. Check the contents and file formats

A useful listing explains what is included, how many resources are supplied and which formats you receive. “Complete toolkit” is not enough detail on its own.

  • Is the product a PDF, spreadsheet, design file, document, code package or external template link?
  • Is it editable, ready to print or intended only for reference?
  • Are examples and instructions included?
  • Do images, fonts or other assets need separate downloads?
  • Is access permanent, time-limited or tied to another service?

Check that your device can open the files. A PDF guide may be convenient on a phone, while a complex spreadsheet or design project may be easier to use on a computer. Ask the seller if the description leaves an essential requirement unclear.

3. Confirm software and account requirements

Look for the application, version and account type required. A template may need Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, Canva, Figma or a specific development environment. Those requirements affect how useful the download will be to you.

Check whether a paid subscription is needed to edit or export the resource. Also confirm whether the listing provides a file you own or a link you must duplicate into your account.

For code and automation resources, review dependencies and setup steps. A working sample may still require your own hosting, credentials or service configuration. Choose a product that matches your skill level and the time you can spend setting it up.

4. Look at a preview of the actual resource

A preview should help you judge the contents. For an ebook, look for a table of contents or sample pages. For a spreadsheet, look for a readable sheet with example values. For a design asset, inspect a detail view as well as the overall cover.

Useful previews show how the resource behaves or what the buyer can make with it. A mockup can look attractive while hiding the actual file structure, readability or level of detail.

If there is no preview, decide whether the description gives you enough information. Ask a specific question such as “Does the planner include a filled-in example?” A precise answer is easier to assess than a general statement that the product is premium.

5. Read the usage terms

Buying a download does not automatically give you permission to resell, redistribute or share the original files. Read the seller’s stated usage terms and check whether they fit your intended use.

  • Can you use the resource for personal work, client work or both?
  • Can you create finished outputs for a business?
  • Can your team use it, or is the licence for one person?
  • Is redistribution or resale prohibited?
  • Do third-party assets have additional conditions?

If a Canva-based product includes editable templates or assets, the seller’s terms and Canva’s own guidance may both matter. Check the requirements attached to the specific resource rather than assuming every template has the same permissions.

6. Understand delivery, support and refunds

Read how the product is delivered and where you will find it after payment. The listing or marketplace should explain whether you receive a download, an account library entry or instructions for accessing an external resource.

Check the support contact and what the seller helps with. File access support is different from customisation, installation or ongoing coaching. If updates are mentioned, look for a clear explanation of what is included.

Read the refund policy before purchasing, especially for immediately accessible downloads. Do not assume that a policy for physical goods applies. If the terms are unclear, ask the marketplace or seller before paying.

For help with Quickselar orders or download access, use Quickselar Support. Keep your order details available so the support team can identify the purchase.

7. Assess AI prompts and technical resources carefully

For an AI prompt kit, look for example inputs, sample outputs and a description of the tool or model used. The resource should explain how to review results and adapt the workflow. Identical prompts can produce different outputs.

A useful prompt product helps you work through a task. Claims of guaranteed accuracy, instant income or effortless results deserve closer scrutiny. Check whether the examples resemble the work you need to do.

For an agent skill or automation package, review required permissions and dependencies. Do not put private customer data, passwords or other secrets into an unfamiliar workflow. Use sample data while checking what it does and whether it fits your environment.

A quick comparison example

Imagine two content planners. One offers 200 pages but does not name the file format. The other includes an editable Google Sheets calendar, a completed week, setup instructions and clear limitations.

The second listing gives you more information to assess. That does not prove it is a better product, but it makes compatibility and scope easier to check. Ask the first seller for the missing details before comparing the price.

After you buy: test the download

  1. Confirm that the order appears in your account or receipt.
  2. Save a copy of the original download.
  3. Read the setup instructions before editing.
  4. Open each included file and check that external links work.
  5. Duplicate editable templates before changing the original.
  6. Contact support promptly if something is missing or inaccessible.

Keep any access links and licence information with the files. If you report a problem, describe your device, software version and the step that failed. Do not send passwords or sensitive payment credentials to support.

Your digital product buying checklist

  • I know the task I want to complete.
  • The listing names the contents and file formats.
  • I have the required software and account type.
  • The preview shows enough of the actual resource.
  • The usage terms fit my intended use.
  • I understand delivery, support and the refund policy.
  • Any technical setup matches my skills and environment.

Frequently asked questions

Can I edit every digital product?

No. Some products are editable templates, while others are reference PDFs or finished assets. Check the listing for the actual formats and editing requirements.

Can I share a purchased template with my team?

That depends on its licence. Look for the permitted number of users or ask the seller whether a team licence is available.

What should I do if a download does not open?

Check the file type, required software and setup instructions. Then contact the seller or marketplace with the order details and a clear description of the problem.
